It seems that the device vendors won't support Linux until it becomes more popular and Linux will have a hard time to become more popular until it is supported by more device vendors. Is there any chance for success? (I define "success" as my mom or non tech user can use it on a day to day basis)
Given the degree of progress I've seen in the last two or three years, I would say that there definitely is a chance of success, especially if Red Hat, IBM, and others succeed in gaining greater penetration into the corporate world with Linux (since there is lots of money there, and many companies will want their products available to that market).
However, it behooves those of us using Linux today to realize in which ways it is vastly superior to Microsoft Windows or other OS's, and in which way it still lags behind. Of course, for some people, the "lags" will be cause not to switch to Linux yet, but for others the "lags" need to be a reminder to push harder for our suppliers to realize that this is/will be an important market and that it needs to be served well. Every rose has its thorns.
