I don't want to start a holy war, but here's my recent experiences with
Maxtor and Western Digital. I had two drives crash within a month
period (both in separate file servers that see a lot of use, both
were purchased about the same time). A 2 GB Maxtor and a 3.2 GB
Western Digital.
I got through to both tech-support departments in about the same amount
of time. I used a credit card to authorize Express Replacement. Both
gave me the same window of time in which I'd likely see the new drive.
This was on a Thursday. The Maxtor arrived the next Monday and has been
in
flawless operation since.
The Western Digital took almost three weeks to arrive, and when it did,
it was DOA. I called Western Digital back, went through the same
process to get another drive sent out. I was told the reason for
the delay was that they were "upgrading their computer system."
For six weeks? It takes Western Digital over a month to get an upgrade
completed? No comment.
So now, six weeks later, I have a working 3.2 GB drive from Western
Digital.
Your mileage, of course, may vary. I've had every major brand of hard
drive arrive DOA or fail on me at some point (I run a computer lab).
Knowing that drive failures can and will happen to anyone, where I look
next is customer service when it does.
