Is the new device recognised by the bios of your scsi controller?
I can't seem to find the tape device in /dev.
Does your kernel recognise the scsi controller and devices
attached to same?
Check /var/log/messages and visit /proc/scsi.
/proc/scsi/scsi doesn't show the tape drive but the bios sees it when booting. Since the server isn't in production I decided to try a reinstall of RH with the tape drive connected. That has done me well in the past. I also found a PDF with some tips.
