Hmmm.. the laptop should have an IP address _and_ netmask that match the ethernet subnet you're trying to join via proxy ARP. This is the most common cause of the error you're seeing. You'll still need to give the laptop a default gateway to venture out beyond the subnet.

Oh it does get it's IP address but it does not get the netmask I specified nor does it get a default gateway entry.
I tried adding a route manually but I either did it wrong or there is something else amiss. :(
