Hmmm.. the laptop should have an IP address _and_ netmask that match the
ethernet subnet you're  trying to join via proxy ARP.  This is the most 
common cause of the error you're seeing.   You'll still need to give
the laptop a default gateway to venture out beyond the subnet.
