New versions include new, resource hogging facilities. You can always put your kernel on a diet. the "stock" RH compilation includes lots of stuff to make the distribution widely usable. Trimming it down makes a noticeable difference to me. The RH RPM also has some questionable settings like setting High Memory on by default.
