I'm not sure why you feel the need to compile it. The trick is to match your (postfix) "make" statement to the actual (not symed) location of the libraries. BTW, this requires the SASL-devel package installed or it will not work.
Postfix will automatically adjust the "master.cf" to non-chrooted when you compile with SASL support. We're using the auxprop method and it works like a champ.
