I sincerely doubt this would work.  Grub by design looks at the
/etc/grub.conf and automatically rewrites the mbr as I understand it.  When
booting I doubt it would work properly if /etc/grub.conf is missing.  Of
course if someone has a moment and wants to delete their /etc on a TEST
computer (reminder.. don't do this on a machine you care about) then perhaps
they could post it here :-)

BTW, if I was to setup a machine that was not running Linux then I would
perhaps use some other boot manager such as Symantec's boot manager or
perhaps PowerQuest's products.

If a free boot manager is required then go with LILO.  If just running
Windows then why use a boot manager at all?  

I don't get it :-)
