I would bite the bullet and upgrade.  I have had very good luck
upgrading redhat distros over the years.

Why only 7.1? I am running 7.3 on most of my boxes and it is very
stable.  I am in the process of migrating all services to 7.3 boxes.

I really do not have an answer for this one yet.  I have not upgraded my
internal dns box yet.
