I think it's hanging before that point though.  It's not properly
unmounting the hard drives.  For instance, I type 'init 1' to enter single
user-mode, and it hangs before getting there.

Ahhh, thanks.  Yes, the symlinks were missing.  This is now fixed.  Just
the other (more annoying problem IMHO) to fix...
