Make sure you keep the new name in the /etc/hosts file. They are needed there as well. (you mentioned you tried that, just wanted to make sure you hadn't removed it after it failed to work)

After changing this if you wish the change to take affect immediately without reboot issue the following command: # hostname newname.domain.com with newname being the name you want to make the computer.
