Make sure you keep the new name in the /etc/hosts file.  They are needed
there as well.  (you mentioned you tried that, just wanted to make sure you
hadn't removed it after it failed to work)

Change HOSTNAME= in /etc/sysconfig/network to the hostname you
want.  After changing this if you wish the change to take affect
immediately without reboot issue the following command:

# hostname newname.domain.com

with newname being the name you want to make the computer.
