Samuel .. That was my question... editing the kernel source...  I am going
to try /boot, conf.. etc.. I am schedule to install Oracle 9i on Linux 7.3
this weekend..

  Many of these setting will require editing the kernel source and a 
kernel recompile.  Shmmax is really the only one I know you know can 
increase via sysctl, or /proc.
