Some equivalent functions of /etc/system on Sun can be found in /etc/sysctl.conf on Linux. Most of this depends on what you are attempting to accomplish. There is also /etc/modules.conf and various parameters you can pass at boottime.

Kernel settings?? You'll find a vmlinuz file in the /boot directory but this contains the kernel binary image, not any settings. Configuration options are in the /etc directory and the file names are dependant on the section (networking, i18n, etc...). What exactly are you trying to do?
