XiGraphics' CDE with their AcceleratedX will run circles around most X servers.
It is neither free nor cheap, and their tech support is spotty, but the
difference is impressive. We use it on a Matrox Millennium 2 driving a 21"
Hitachi, and it makes Linux almost user-friendly.
