As a newbie, I have to chime in here and express my frustration at RedHat
for changing adduser. I too bought books to help me learn linux and both
of them state that if you run adduser without any arguments that it will
prompt you through the process of adding a user. By changing adduser from
what is apparently standard behavior on other unix and linux distributions,
RedHat made it more difficult to use.
Then when I ran "man adduser", it wasn't obvious to me that the login
argument was the user name. Thankfully, someone else who was having this
problem asked about it in one of the linux newsgroups and got the answer.
FYI, the two books were Mark Sobell's "A Practical Guide to Linux" (the
most highly rated book on using Linux that I could find at Amazon.com) and
"Linux for Dummies" which I bought because it is based on RedHat Linux.
When you are struggling to master a complex new piece of software (and I've
never encounterd a more complex piece of software than linux), it is very
frustrating to run into problems due to non-standard behavior.
Just had to get that off my chest.
Regards,
Al Margheim
