Can you use a DVD-ROM drive with Linux?

I am considering getting a new system to
use as a dual-boot Linux/95 system.
I wouldn't want to watch movies in Linux (!),
I would just want to use DVD as a CD-ROM.

I assume that, since DVD works like a CD-ROM
and has an IDE interface, you could probably get it to
work as a standard CD-ROM in Linux. Of course,
I have no basis for this assumption - just a hunch!

Anyway, I'm just curious. I wouldn't want to buy a
new system and not be able to use Linux.
