I think there is really some problem with ftp in Red Hat 5.0. I have an old
version Slackware (Kernal 1.1.59) Linux box as well as RH 5.0 box on the LAN.
Previously, we forwarded all Corporate Internet E-mail traffic to the
Slackware box for transmission so as to relieve the Netware Server workload.
Recently, we have re-directed all those traffic to the RH5.0 box, and then
found that there generated a long queue running up on the Netware Server.
Before reading these E-mails, I thought my case was just occassional and
isolated one. But now, I do make some benchmarks for ftp between the two Linux
boxes and also from Win95. The result is interesting :
GET (KB/second) PUT (KB/second)
SL ftp to RHL 840 / 860 / 870 22 / 22 / 21
RHL ftp to SL 19 / 19 / 21 790 / 840 / 900
W95 ftp to RHL 698 / 1094 / 994 2.07 / 2.09 / 2.09
W95 ftp to SL 542 / 497 / 520 852 / 800 / 443
The RH 5.0 box is already far more superior in hardware configuration (P200 /
64 MB / 4.3 GB) than the Slackware Linux box (486@133 / 32 MB / 1.3 GB).
Can anyone explain why RH5.0 runs so consistently slow during ftp inward ?
Regards,
Raymond.

Run Linux on both ends. 8-)
