Hello all.
After upgrading my "intel" system from RH 4.2 to RH 5.0 and updating the
items in the errata, "w" and "last" appear to be broken.
Running "w" gives:
-------------------------------------------------------------------------
4:48pm up 4:13, 0 users, load average: 0.00, 0.00, 0.00
USER TTY FROM LOGIN@ IDLE JCPU PCPU WHAT
-------------------------------------------------------------------------
That's it. No users.
Running "last" gives:
-------------------------------------------------------------------------
wtmp begins Mon Mar 9 16:58:51 1998
-------------------------------------------------------------------------
The time reported looks to be the last time the wtmp file was touched.
i.e. the last time someone logged in/out.
Oh... I just tried testing that again to be sure and now I get:
-------------------------------------------------------------------------
*e*** Wed Dec 31 19:00 still logged in
wtmp begins Fri Jan 2 02:30:08 1970
-------------------------------------------------------------------------
The system date is set correctly in case you were about to ask. I have no
idea where the Dec 31 or Jan 2 stuff comes from.
I have tried re-installing the latest util-linux rpm as well as reverting
to the original 5.0 rpm. Running "rpm -qf /var/run/utmp" doesn't find the
rpm that owns the file. Same with "rpm -qf /var/log/wtmp".
Any clues would be greatly appreciated.
