I have tried ">/var/run/utmp" and ">/var/log/wtmp" to no avail. "w" still
shows nobody logged in and "last" now just shows "wtmp begins Tue Mar 10
10:09:36 1998".

I am stumpped. Has nobody else run into this? More importantly, has anyone
got any ideas of things to try to get things working normally again or
provide more useful debugging info?
