This may not even be close, but:

There was an article in Linux Journal #43 - 11/97 about GIMP
and one of the tips was "gimp --no-xshm" if the remote system
does not support the MIT-SHM extension.

Check your Sun Box with "xdpyinfo | grep MIT-SHM"

We're having to stay at 2.5 due to applications on our boxes
not supporting 2.6 and I haven't come up with the energy to
upgrade the Intel/Sparc boxes to RH 5.0 yet. 4.2 is too stable
in our $ENV.
