I tried asking this back in April and never got an answer, so I thought I'd
try again. It is really a pain!
--------------------
I have some Intel architecture machines running RH 5.0, but the Unix
machine on my desktop is an UltraSparc running Solaris 2.6. Because of
this, I would like to be able to run X applications with $DISPLAY pointing
to my desktop machine.
This appeared to work fine when the Intel machines were running RH 4.2, but
some problems appear with RH 5.0. A couple particular cases:
Control Panel:
From xterm window on the Solaris machine, I rlogin to the RH 5.0 machine
with $DISPLAY pointing to the Solaris machine. When I invoke
'control-panel', I get a message in the invocation window that says:
** WARNING **: XShmAttach failed!
Red Hat Linux usercfg 3.5
Copyright (C) 1996, 1997 Red Hat Software
Redistributable under the terms of the GNU General Public License
and the displayed control panel has a 'control-panel' label on the
window, a 'File' menu item, a vertical row of blank grey (gray?)
buttons on the left, a blank grey area to the right of that, and a
scroll-bar at the right side of the window. Resting the mouse on any
of the blank buttons brings up a text label and the buttons themselves
and the scroll-bar appear to work normally.
Netscape
The original Netscape that I got from the Netscape site appeared to
work normally, at least to the best of my recollection, given that this
was back in December. When the RedHat package appeared, I loaded that
one and now Netscape appears to have problems with the Solaris X
display as well. As an example, in RedHat's home page, the text to the
left of the "Road Tour? appares as two short blue horizontal lines.
The text to the right of "Wow!" appears as two longer thin blue lines,
the text below 'Get Red Hat Linux..." appears as 4 assorted length blue
lines, and the text below 'Red Hat In The News' appears as numerous
(too lazy to count) various length blue lines. Under 'Recent News',
the bold-underlined text appears, but the rest is just whitespace and
blue lines.
It appears that bold-underlined text is appearing correctly, non-bold
underlined text displays only the underlines and plain vanilla text
disappears entirely.
In both cases, the display for these tools is normal when run on the RH 5.0
machine's *OWN* display.
Is there something I need to tell RH 5.0 about the Solaris display to make
this work properly? As I mentioned, everything worked fine with RH 4.2.
Note that the Solaris machine has a cgsix accelerated 8-bit-color frame
buffer if that is perhaps relevant to the problem. The problem
occurs with Solaris 2.5 or 2.51 as well as Solaris 2.6. I don't have any
problems with the Solaris X-display to machines *OTHER* than RH 5.0.
