PPP and NFS conflict?

    Hi all. I am looking for an easy way out of this one (aren't we all!)
I have RH 5.0 running on a 233 Mhz Pentium-II and it has been working fine
for several months. It's part of a little LAN I have in the house with the
other systems running 95 and NT. All worked great . . . I was using the
Linux system to get my UNIX speed back up and I had things like PCNFS
mounts working with the various other systems, could run Netscape out
through my NT proxy server,etc. A good clean stable UNIX install.

    About a week ago, I decided to get PPP working and that turned out to
be not too difficult. I was able to make it work with the X based network
tool and all was well. Today, I was testing some crontabs and had to
reboot the system with an INIT 6. It came back up with the following
error: Starting NFS services: rpc.mountd Cannot register service: RPC:
Unable to send; errno = Network is unreachable . . . rpcinfo gives the
following error: rpcinfo" can't contact portmapper: RPC: Remote system
error - Network is unreachable.

    Obviously the PPP installation is involved as it is the only thing I
was fooling with in the past month or two. And, whatever it was didn't
kick in until I re-booted. I've rebooted several times and no go. So, I
removed the PPP and I still have the error. The thing is, I can telnet and
FTP back and forth to the NT and 95 systems, everything seems to know each
other by both IP and name. resolv.conf and the host table look to be the
way I remember. The only impact is I can't do PCNFS mounts anymore (and I
assume I wouldn't be able to do ordinary NFS mounts if I had another UNIX
system.)

    Anyone have any suggestions? I really don't want to hit this one with
a sledgehammer and re-install RH unless I have to. There has to be some
configuration file that enabling the PPP changed, but I can't fine it. Any
suggestions would be appreciated.
