All right, here's my .02 also...

I am interested in learning about Unix, and have been working with
computers for 18 years. I started out doing COBOL and RPG and FORTRAN
and moved on to languages like Paradox and currently PowerBuilder. I
started getting interested in Unix about four years ago when I started
getting on the internet, and more so recently when I started developing
in PowerBuilder using Sybase under Unix for the back end.

>From my standpoint of not knowing unix, but having worked my way up from
the old days of DOS, I find Linux to be convoluted and frustrating. It
took me less than a day to set up my Win95 machine and the only time it
had any problems was while I was fooling around to get it to triple boot
DOS 6.22/Win95/Win NT 4.0 (I know - that's weird). I picked up an old
486-66 16 Meg of RAM, 430MB HD and added a SCSI card, two CDRoms and an
extra (IDE) hard drive. It took me at least six tries before it
installed. I was just about ready to scrap the whole thing and install
95 for the kids before I finally got an install - and a minimal one at
that. from that point on, it wasn't too difficult to get the modem
running, but the printer was confusing - I finally did get it running
though. However the NIC (granted - a no-name NE2000 clone) never was
recognized, and when I tried to compile a c program I downloaded
(ne2k.c), stdio.h and a bunch of other standard headers were no where to
be found. Guess I had to install another package if I REALLY wanted to
compile programs.

These have been some of the main problems I've had. I'm sure there will
be more, but for the average user I don't think this is an OS I would
recommend. For my purposes (learning more about the internet -
firewalls, mail, webservers, proxy servers, etc) it is the best - even
though I hate it right now.
