I have been trying all day to install xemacs on my RH 5.0 with a singular lack of success due to the above message. First I tried the xemacs .rpm's off the RH5.0 PowerTools CD, then the ones I laboriously downloaded from /pub/contrib/i386 on the Red Hat ftp site. Both had the same problem, though since each was a slightly different version that final text varied a little.. I tried searching the mail list archives but that facility is currently not available. I tried deja news and found several claims that the xemacs in contrib/hurricane/i386 would install clean on RH 5.0 so I downloaded that one, but it too displayed an obsession with libpng.so.0. Looking at Deja News once more I re-read the messages and noticed that the problems referenced there were looking for libpng.so.1 rather than .0 as in my case. /usr/lib contains neither .0 or .1, just libpng.so.2.1.0 and various links to it. When I do a rpm -q libpng I see that I have libpng-1.0.1-1 installed, and checking the errata pages I see no update to what must have been installed with RH5.0.
