Sorry to hear your having such a difficult time.  They all definately need some
more work as far as installation/configuration.  The GNOME should be arriving at
a popular FTP site near you shortly :)

Anyway, edit your .xinitrc in your home directory to look something like:

#!/bin/sh
exec afterstep


and that should do it.  The first time it starts it creates a GNUstep directory
in your home directory, but that path can be changed (haven't played with it
enough myself to know how yet..)
