Thanks David. That does look like things I already tried (and didn't work; starting kwin_wayland from a virtual terminal gives me a drm error about /dev/card0, for instance) but I'll just try again. Other David: as I said, this is not a standard set-up, so just selecting wayland as a login option on the login manager screen isn't an option. R.
