I havent used the 43 seriously, so cant say. Opinion on the 43 seems to be divided. As so many like it so much I would doubt that any zoom will measure up though (please lets not go there again!).
I was actually very disappointed with the build and feel of the 43 when I handled it a PDML UK in Duxford. I felt light and flimsy after the 77. That's not to say its not well built, but just holding the 77 is an experience in itself and I expected the same. The reason I don't have the 43 is largely because I don't shoot at that focal length much though. I would always want longer or wider. The only primes I have are a macro and the 24 and 77. The reason I have the 24 and 77 is because those are 'my' lengths of choice. The 24-90 is fantastic though and if you want a zoom you cant really do much better. The build is consumer level, but the optics are top drawer. It can look overpriced based on specs and build, but the glass is what you are buying.
