I thought about it while I was away in France. There's an Auvergnat dish called 
Truffade which could be proto-poutine. It's made from sautéed potatoes mixed 
with cheese (no gravy) and formed into patties. It's very nice. Gravy of course 
is mere millimetres away. If you're having your truffade with a steak and a bit 
of sauce, well there you have it all.

Aligot, which is mashed potatoes and cheese, seems to be a close relation, and 
is very nice with sausages in onion gravy.
