Until the 1960s our flag was the Red Ensign, a Union Jack on a red
field with the shield of Canada thereon. Even as a kid I thought it
was humiliating.

I was brought up in a family that had a strong allegiance to Britain and the Crown of England. My dad called the Maple Leaf Pearson's rag. I'm far less interested inthe whole royalty thing, though I do hope Kate and what's his name have a happy life.
Big ears should give up on being King and just fade away.

After considerable debate, in 1965 we adopted the current Red Maple
Leaf flag, which I thought as an eight year old, and still think now,
is the most beautiful flag in the world. I will admit to some bias in
that regard.

I can't think of another flag I would like to live under, but I do think people put way to much importance on the trappings of pennantry.
