Thanks to you and everyone else who responded. it is a PCI-e v2 connector. It looks like $100 or so will cover it is I need a new card. I do play a few games etc and will want to get something at least on par with what I have. So far the machine has booted up OK a few times - maybe just reseating things and blowing out the dust helped.

What kind of connector does your video card have? More precisely, what
kind of slot does your PC have for a video card? That makes a big
difference in what's available.

This computer, the one I use for general internet, is old enough it has
an AGP slot. When I had to replace the video card a couple of years back
I had a hard time finding any AGP Video cards.

Everything is now PCI-Express, although there are still some plain
vanilla PCI cards around. And a quick look just now, it appears that
PCI-Express is now 2.0, 2.1 or 3.0 in addition to the original PCI
Express.

Also comes in regular or x16 flavors.

NVidia GTS 250 is apparently the chip set various manufacturers can use.

This morning my PC greeted me with a few simple beeps - one long and
three short. It then booted but the screen was blank. I reseated the
video card and nothing changed. I then pulled some of the RAM and it
booted without a probelm. Put hte ram back in and it seems to be working
fine. I have double checked the manual and the beeps mean video card
failure.

Been a few years since I bought any PC gear. What are the current
standards in video cards? Assuming that I need to get one, I would like
to get something intending primarily to use it with Photoshop. I am
currently using an NVidia GTS 250 with 1 gig of RAM - probably pretty
rudimentary by current standards. But, of course, I don't want to shell
out an arm and a leg...
