I've cleaned a couple of mirrors with no disasters or problems. One had a lot of black, decomposed foam and sticky stuff on it. I just used some lens cleaner on a q-tip, and gently wiped it away. Another list member is using the camera now, and he's had no complaints or concerns about the silvering on the mirror.
Both screens and mirrors can be easily scratched or damaged if you're not careful. I admit to great trepidation when fiddling around with either, but I do believe they're not quite as fragile as they're made out to be.
