I use an SLA battery pack with my 540 at times that I made, but it is simply
a 6V substitute pack that connects to the battery compartment, not an HV
pack. As such it does offer vastly more flashes, but the recycle time is no
quicker (at least to start with, unlike AA's it doesn't really get longer
unless you use it a LOT.)

I use the Pentax pack with C cells. It works well. I do wish there was a
lead acid battery available for the 540, but unfortunately there is none
of which I'm aware.
