Note that I am trying to specify features and performance, not brand
and the way to achieve them.
Assuming income (I start my new job on Monday by the way), and a
reasonably stable bank account, I'd buy a body with K7 features and
performance that equals, or betters, either the K7 or the Kx in
sensitivity, focus and metering about as soon as the price starts
dropping and the bug revision firmware comes out.

What about you?
My K-x has nearly the low light sensitivity I want. I haven't had a
chance to process all of the photos from Friday night blues last
night, but here are a few of the better ones:

I figure that in 2-3 years Pentax bodies will have the high ISO
performance I need, and 2-3 years after that the ISO performance I want.
I want them to come with a split prism focusing screen, because auto
focus will never be able to do exactly what I want. Although, with
evil, in theory the focus selection area will be infinitely selectable
and arbitrarily small. Since what I want is completely selectable
focusing with no noticeable shutter lag, we're probably a few Moore's
cycles from that too.
I want fast glass, with autofocus ability, designed for digital
sensors. In wish-land these would work with both APS and 24x36 sensors:
20/1.4 30, 50 & 80 f/1.2 100/2 200, 300 f/2.8 600/4
I want these lenses to all be weather sealed.
I realize that my above sensor speed wish will make the fast glass
economically unfeasible to produce. When you can get two stops faster
performance in the sensor by waiting four years, it's silly to spend
the money on lenses that'll cost $400-$4000 each. It's not like lens
manufacturers can make money based on the assumption that people will
buy gear just because it's the best available despite their actual
needs.
I'd like a lens the size of my DA40, with a little wider angle of
view, and f/1.4.
I want all of these lenses to be weather sealed.
I want a body that's smaller than the K-x, and weather sealed. I'd
like for it to have a battery grip that brings it up to about the size
of the K20.
I want in body shake reduction.
I want Nikon levels of flash metering.
I want in camera high speed wifi that'll allow me to use my computer
for instantly reviewing shots, rather than relying on the tiny screen.
I want a program for my droid that'll use that wifi, so if I'm doing
shots at night, I can sit in the warm car, and control the camera on
the tripod, and review the shots from there. It would also, if I want,
add gps data to the exif.
Most of the software features I want are to help people who know what
they are doing get great photos, not for people who don't know what
they are doing to get decent photos.
I want the histogram to work with raw, not jpeg data.
I want bracketed exposures to leave the mirror up, to reduce lag and
bounce between shots.
I want "expose to the left" as an exposure mode.
I want an auto exposure mode where the camera bases the exposure off
of the full frame of raw data, even if it takes it a second to scan
everything into memory, and a few test exposures to get the range. I
want to also have the option of telling the camera to do it in as many
frames as necessary (raw HDR mode) to get everything in the frame.
This, of course would be for tripod mounted situations, or ones where
you have the camera set it up for a lighting situation that doesn't
change much.
I want an electronic shutter for the same reason. If I want a three
exposure HDR shot, in daylight, it shouldn't take more than 1/60 second.
If the camera is shooting in live view, I want to be able to tell it
to find faces in the image and use them for focusing. For group
portraits, I'd like a mode where it'll go into live view and pick the
best focus for most of the faces.
I'd also like to be able to afford all of the above.
But, I don't want a pony. I already know what it's like to haul hay
and shovel shit.
