Welcome to the wonder of default JPEG settings. They suck, especially
on older Pentax DSLR's.

Turn down the saturation a notch and the colour will be nice and smooth.

Pentax colours are not garish. Canon's defaults on their lower-end
bodies do garish. Fuji is however noted for very, very good colour,
especially on the SuperCCD and SuperCCD EXR based cameras.
