I do a lot of shooting in adverse lighting conditions. So, I need high ISO. That was my primary motivation for upgrading from the K100 to the K20. The D700 is even faster. I haven't done a side by side comparison of sports photography, but the D700 is supposed to be better than the K20 for that, between the faster autofocus and the faster ISO. Plus, I expect, the D700 would do better than the K20 for any shot where Nikon makes a better lens than Pentax for that purpose. For example, my buddy got his D700 for shooting his daughter's basketball games. He uses the new Nikon 50/1.4. Pentax does not make a 30/1.4. The 31 is awesome but the stop or two he has in the body, plus the 2/3 of a stop in the glass means that he can shoot at a much faster shutter speed than I would be able to. I'm sure that David can list a lot more cases where the D700 does better than the K20, and a bunch where the K20 does better than the D700. -- Photographs are like sentences, the best ones have both subjects and verbs.
