Hi,
there are actually three competitive recordable DVD formats - DVD-RAM
(oldest), DVD-R(W) and DVD+R(W).
DVD-R and DVD+R are actually not compatible at all as the data layouts
and error management technologies are different. DVD-R comes from
Pioneer, DVD+R from DVD+RW Alliance (Philips, Sony, Yamaha etc).
Theoretically, +R should be more advanced and error-proof (also less
dependable of media quality), but practically (thanks to advanced drives
and precise media) there's no significant difference.
Today, most of the hardware are DVD-Multi or hybrid readers/writers that
can handle both "plus" and "dash" formats. So-called Super Multi drives
can read/write also DVD-RAM.

Short answer - Verbatim Archival Grade is the best, known brands work
fine, avoid cheap media.
Long answer ( if you are interested) based to some research we made here

Very informative! Thanks for relaying that so succinctly. I had always
figured Verbatim was a cheapo brand, but apparently not!
Now, would someone remind me of the difference between DVD-R and DVD+R?
