Serious answer:  because recommendations are much more valuable if
you have some idea of the mindset and reliability of the author.

That's why Wired.com didn't work, originally - when anybody could
post articles it became very difficult to sort the wheat from the
chaff.  And it's taken quite some time for Wikipaedia to achieve
some level of trustworthiness.
