Another way to look at this is to consider the difference between a "good" and an "advanced" camera. My old SP 500 (Think K1000) is a "good" film camera. It has a nice lens and will take exceptional pictures. It is manual focus and has a simple matching needle meter which means at best I am turning aperture rings and shutter speed knobs just to get a reasonable average exposure. Backlighting, shadows, etc. can only be dealt with by my knowledge (or lack thereof) of photography. My MZ-S is an "advanced" film in that is has automatic exposure and autofocus. These really don't help you take a better picture. If you have a basic knowledge of photography, it will help you take a good picture faster. The chances are good, however, that if you can't get good shots from the SP 500 you won't get them from the MZ-S either. The MZ-S is simply more convenient.
If you're fairly new to photography, you just have to be patient and learn. Even after all these years, I still sometimes let my impatient side take over and don't really think while I'm shooting. I'm usually rewarded by a set of rotten pictures. On advantage of digital is that I can see my stupidity earlier in the process. <g> >>> <[EMAIL PROTECTED]> 10/3/2007 9:35 AM >>> A good camera won't help you deal with bad light. There are ways to take pics in high sun conditions: backlit, for example, with a reflector bouncing light back at the subject. But why not s hoot when the light is good? (Low and diffuse, preferably) Indooor flash is only nice when bounced off a ceiling or a reflector. Get some books on flash photography and outdoor portrait lighting. Knowledge will always win out over equipment, even the very best equipment.
