I have the grip and usually have it on the camera.  I *like* the vertical 
shutter release.  It does make the camera big though and it's nice to take 
it off when needed.  Sotrage for the remote control and an extra SD card is 
cool.

I like its range and it seems to make acceptable images.  The 16-45 is 
probbly better but it costs more too.  Like you said, it's virtually free 
when you get the camera.  I'd even say you should look at a bundle with the 
50-200 as well if that lens is interesting to you.

Buy the spare battery. And buy some fast SD cards.  I had to buy a new bag 
to accomidate the camera with grip attached (woe is me, right?).
