The combination of - more resolution for large prints - better responsiveness - image stabilization - features more appropriate for my use are what motivated me to buy. It fulfills all of thos promises, has more accurate and faster focusing, has more accurate metering, and is a better fit to my hands than the DS (large hands) although the DS body does amazingly well for such a small body.
I have the grip and find I don't use it at all, I prefer the ergonomics of the camera without it. It's available for sale. Any NP400 form factor, Li-Ion battery works fine. I have one of the Impact brand rated at 1750 mAh, the original Pentax rated at 1700 mAh, and a Konica Minolta rated at 1500 mAh. Differences between them in terms of number of exposures per charge are trivial. I use primarily prime lenses with the Pentax K10D. I've not used the 18-55, didn't like the imaging quality when i experimented with it at the store and it's too slow at 55mm. The only zoom I use with any frequency is the FA20-35, I like its rendering qualities more than the DA16-45, but even that one I find myself using so infrequently now that I am considering selling it. Get the IR remote if you don't already have one. It is extremely useful for tripod work as the K10D has IR sensors on both front and back.
