I've never used the K10D with the grip. The one I borrowed didn't have
it, and it handled quite nicely without. I'd probably get used to a
grip if I did a lot of vertical shooting, though.

It's a decent lens. Certainly better than the Canon and Nikon
equivalent kit lenses. There is a real focusing ring on the front, at
least.  If you have the 16-45 already on your DS, you can swap that
over to the K10D, and put the 18-55 on the DS.

Try one for a few days. If that doesn't sell you on it, nothing will.
