Yes, it's very high contrast, but that's fully intentional, for making the subjects look like shadows and the shadows look like subjects. I was also tempted to call that pic "highshadows", as opposed to "highlights" ;-) I agree those half-shadows on the bottom were disturbing, hence I've cloned them out.
