Pentax doesn't have an 18-200 equivalent available for the APS sensor
yet anyway. I think that you'll find that most super zoom lenses will
have a fair amount of distortion no matter who makes them. It's just
the nature of the beast. You should really take a look at the Tamron
before you decide it has too much distortion. I've found that many
reviewers don't understand the difference between the normal rectilinear
view you see in a very wide angle lens and real problems like barrel or
pincushion distortion. The other possibility is a two zoom kit. The
Pentax Kit lens (18-55), is supposed to be pretty good and inexpensive.
Just add a longer but not "super" zoom to the mix. I find a couple of
shorter zooms, for a two zoom kit I favor the smc Pentax 20-35 f4 and
the smc Pentax 28-200 f3.8~5.6, the latter is a super zoom but the APS
sensor improves it immensely. If you could get the Pentax 18-55 you
could get the same focal length coverage by adding the Pentax 50-200,
it's supposed to be very good, (lots of people here seem to like it),
and it's not that expensive.

Things should be made as simple as possible -- but no simpler.
