Speed the the *ist DS is no worry.
Continuous shots of birds in flight are quite possible, see the 2nd &
3rd pictures...

I shot 8 jpg's in a row with those before the buffer was full - about 3 fps.

Sensibly, you should figure out your shake reduction needs.
I still haven't tested it much.  More later...
The *ist DS will only get cheaper, but it is a fine camera.
I'm keeping mine as a backup (and for wifey, who is becoming proficent).

The K10d moves me closer to the original *ist D features, and I
skipped that camera early on and went for the cheaper DS.  Now I can
get a battery grip.

Overall, I would recommend taking the plunge and getting something.
You have some nice lenses (16-45 is yummy).  See how it compares to
your Canon gear.  You know the price of the Canon gear will only fall
over time as new stuff is introduced.  A DS now would get you started
and let you 'dump the junk' and jump up to the K10d as prices fell a
little bit. :-)
