Like Godfrey, I've also made the transition to the "Smart Sharpen" tool for most of my work. Trouble (for most people) is, it's even more esoteric than the unsharp mask tool, which is difficult enough to get a handle on. But both tools' use varies a lot depending on both image content (the amount and spatial frequency of fine detail) and intended purpose of the sharpening (basic sharpening, creative sharpening, print output or web display), so the number if "correct" settings is almost infinite.
