Are you using the right type of media for your drive? Can you burn anything
to DVD? Also if your drive is really full you might be having buffer issues
(I'm just thinking out loud here).

I use Nero that came with my DVD drive & it's pretty simple.

Start Nero, click "Make Data DVD", select the folder I want to burn (my
.pef's are arranged in folders of 350 files ~4.3MB), name the disk & click
the "Burn" button. A few minutes later it spits out the disk & asks if I
want to burn another.

Another thing, if your using Windows XP you can just click & drag the
folder you want to burn onto the disk in Windows Explorer and then right
click on the disk in Explorer & click "Write these files to CD".
