Well you are free to hold that position but to me the output from the
CCD has just been sampled and massaged to fit the 12 bit RAW profile
optimally. We don't know the data depth in processing, we only know
that the CCD is sampled with 22 bit data precision. The 12 bit RAW
file is contains discrete RGB data sampled under a Bayer filter
pattern so it has to undergo significant post processing for it to be
even recognised as a colour image.

I think you're missing something. And I am not technical enough to hold my
own arguing with you, so I won't even try. A couple of points though -- on the
web page I linked to, they said 16 bit through put. Not 12 bit. Adobe is
upgrading CS2 in the next version to use more 16bit functions in more menus (as
most
know, now only a few choices work higher than 8 bit). Pentax has said they
plan to upgrade the sensor in the K10D over time as new sensors, better ones,
become available. Okay, this might not apply to a sale now -- but stop thinking
of 12 bit output as the maximum -- things are obviously moving beyond that.
And I think Pentax is going to be a significant factor in helping push that
movement. In fact, I think they are very consciously thinking ahead about it.

So, no, I don't think the 22 bit thing is all just hype.
