I'm perfectly aware of that.  But the point is that 22 bits is far
more than you need - if you scale the 22-bit quantity to use all
the bits then a change of a single electron in the CCD prior to
digitisation will change the output value by something like 50
(and that's using the most generous estimates of the technology).
A 22-bit quantity is 'measuring' to a precision that doesn't exist;
at that level of detail the voltage isn't a smooth, continuous curve.
