The 18-55 is simply the best cheap kit lens I've seen since the early (SMC-F) AF era. It's better built, better spec'd and better performing than anything the competition is selling for similar money. Only the Nikon 18-70 outperforms it, and that costs 2x as much (And really is far too much of a lens for kit use)
