That's what the designer said. So, it does not sound like they had any specific goal in mind other than to create the former 40mm in a DA incarnation, also taking advantage of the elimination of the focusing ring. It sounded almost like designers experimented how compact a lens they can make as a precursor to the DA compacts that followed.
